Getting to know our head brewer, Bryan Stewart, on a more personal level than just seeing him hauling stuff around the brewery…
What the hell do you do for DS?
Head Brewer: I make beer, and carry around heavy things.
How many years have you been in the craft beer industry?
All in all, almost 4. Two years on the production side.
What did you do before adopting Double Shift as your home?
Went to school for journalism, worked in print media and radio for a few years before trekking to KC and Colorado. Worked in bars, liquor stores and breweries prior to D/S gathering as much knowledge and industry contacts as possible. But I consider D/S my first truly, "professional," gig.
What is the one thing that you can’t live without?
Music, it's a huge part of what defines me.
Where is your favorite place to have a beer?
Outside, preferably near a fire; far, far away from the city. Oh, and out of a can. And I prefer that can to be 16 ounces.
Who is the one person you wish you could buy a round for?
Jack Kerouac or Cormac McCarthy, maybe both.
What is your favorite DS beer to drink?
Don't Call Me Radio: I designed it with myself in mind, fortunately people liked it.

What do you imbibe on that isn’t beer?
Non-Alcoholic: Yerba Mate, and coffee. medium to dark roast. Usually black because.. who needs stomach lining?
Alcoholic: I'm a big fan of gin.
What is your most played song right now?
I've regressed back to high school lately and been listening to a lot of At the Drive-In.
If you were immortal for a day, what would you do?
Punch Poseidon in the face and steal his trident.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I wouldn't say it's hidden, but I'm pretty sure I'm the best cook I know.
What do you do when you aren’t working?
Despite my fluffy exterior at the moment, I'm really into backpacking. As much time as I can spend in the mountains, disconnected from the world, or trying to overcome a crippling fear of falling down a dry-fall in a slot canyon, I'll take it. Usually take a couple trips to Utah and Colorado every year.
What super power would you have?
To summon a chair on command. I'm not even kidding.
What movie can you quote the most?
Super Troopers or Home Alone or Inglorious Basterds.
What was the beer that got you in to craft beer?
Dogfish Head India Brown or Highland Brewing Co's Oatmeal Stout. I have very distinct memories of the first time I drank both. Both did come from the same bar in Southern Pines, NC near where I grew up: The Wine Cellar. Super relaxed tasting room surrounded by Bordeaux's, oak barrels and other wines I couldn't afford at the time. They had a beer cooler then filled with these seemingly foreign labels from mostly NC, but other regional breweries. This is where I put down the Jager and discovered that not all beer tastes like Steele Reserve - the only beer I remember my dad drinking. My palette is somewhat more refined since then.
What’s one item on your bucket list?
I don't believe in bucket lists, honestly. I'd rather be happy with what I've done and where I've been than spend time wishing I was elsewhere.
What would you name your autobiography?
Bryan Stewart: The Story of a Hairy Dude.
